Description
48RE Transmission Rebuild Process
The 48RE torque converter is upgraded with a billet cover and precision-machined mounting pads exceed OEM specifications, eliminating common issues like front seal leaks, premature bushing wear, and driveline vibration. Each torque converter is rigorously tested for leaks, lockup function, concentricity, and balance to ensure optimal performance. Designed for both diesel and heavy-duty gasoline applications, this unit features a new heavy-duty lock-up lining for improved torque transfer. The upgraded valve body includes an enhanced throttle valve, manual valve, 4-spool switch valve, and pressure regulator valve, all working together to deliver smoother shifting, improved lubrication, and enhanced overall performance. In addition, the valve body is modified to support torque converter charging in Park, boosting durability and providing smoother gear engagement.
The remanufactured pump assembly ensures consistent internal line pressures, eliminating slipping and delayed engagement issues. The High/Reverse clutch is upgraded to a 4-plate configuration for both gas and diesel applications, while the Overdrive (OD) direct clutch is enhanced with a 10-plate setup and updated thrust plate for increased durability. The Overdrive planetary assembly is upgraded to a 5-pinion unit, offering superior load capacity and longevity. The OD clutch is further upgraded to a 4-plate configuration for gas engines and a 5-plate clutch for diesel engines. An oversized Low/Reverse brake band strut is installed to maintain proper band clearance, effectively eliminating drum slippage and “no-reverse” conditions. Precision-fit SP-spec 48RE bushings are installed as needed to enhance internal fluid flow and pressure control. All bushings and machined surfaces are polished to a mirror-like OE finish of 16 RA or better, ensuring top-tier reliability and long-term performance.
